There's still time for mountain climbers to don their boots and raise vital funds for some of the world's poorest people by taking on the 2010 WaterAid Munro Challenge.
The Munro Challenge, hosted by Scottish Water and supported by the UK water industry, aims to put a team on the summit of each of Scotland's Munros and peaks over 3,000ft in England, Wales and Ireland between 12 noon and 2pm on Saturday 12 June 2010.
The event hopes to raise £300,000 for WaterAid's work to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education projects to those living in poverty in Africa, Asia and the Pacific region.
With registration closing on Wednesday 9 June, WaterAid is issuing a final call to climbers keen to take on the challenge of bagging a Munro. Over 400 teams of climbers have already signed up to scale a peak, and teams are still needed for some mountains, including:
- Derry Cairngorm - Eastern Highlands
- The Devil's Point - Eastern Highlands
- Sgurr Alasdair - Skye
- Stob Ban (Grey Corries) - South West Highlands
Peter Dowswell, Chair of the Munro Challenge Steering Group said: "By taking on the personal challenge of climbing a mountain, participants can help WaterAid give some of the poorest people in the world better access to something many of us take for granted, one of life’s basic needs – clean water.
"We’re encouraging climbers of all levels to get involved and it's not too late to sign up. Full safety guidelines are provided so first-timers and pros alike can focus on enjoying the day and raising as much money as possible for WaterAid."
To help lift people out of poverty, all you have to do is get a team of four to six together, with a minimum sponsorship of £50 per person, and then register your team at www.wateraidmunrochallenge.org. The event is open to all competent walkers over the age of 18.
